Why does white scale form on a salt-water pool in Thailand, and what can be done?

White scale on a salt-water pool in Thailand is calcium coming out of the water: warm water, evaporation and a pH that drifts upwards — which salt chlorination encourages — leave calcium carbonate on the finish, at the waterline and on the plates of the salt cell. At the waterline it bakes together with body oils, suncream and dust into a hard crust. It is dealt with by on-site water testing and balancing, and by cleaning the deposits in a way that suits the surface after a small test patch.

Why white scale and a waterline crust form in Thailand

Two things are going on. Calcium scale forms when the water balance drifts: warm water, evaporation and a rising pH push calcium carbonate out of solution onto the finish, the waterline and the plates of the salt cell, and salt chlorination tends to push pH up, so a salt pool needs regular acid balancing to stay in range. At the waterline, body oils, suncream and lotions trap dust, while evaporating water leaves calcium and iron in the layer; warm water and tropical sun bake these into a hard band. This can affect ceramic tile, glass mosaic, natural stone and PebbleCrete surfaces. A new cement-based finish can also leave a light white film early on after filling as the cement cures, which is one more reason to balance the water from the first fill.

Build-up also happens when routine cleaning ignores the pump room or water balance. A salt chlorinator generates sanitiser from salted pool water, but it does not balance the water: the pool still needs filtration, water testing and acid added as the tests show. There are no universal product doses or schedules: source water, equipment, pool use and the finish all matter, and water testing is done on site.

How existing waterline scale is removed

No single method suits every pool. Chemical cleaning is possible, along with enzyme degreasers, non-acid scale removers and metal-stain treatments, but chemicals must be used with care. Some mineral crusts do not dissolve in acid, and acid can take tile glaze, natural stone or grout with it.

Where mechanical cleaning is needed, we use controlled media blasting after identifying the deposit on site and testing a small patch with you first. If the tiles and grout are sound, we work with the water lowered without draining.

Scale across the floor and walls of the finish is a different job from the waterline band. It is assessed at inspection: light deposits are dealt with through water balance and routine brushing, while heavier deposits can need the pool drained — planned with the season and the groundwater in mind — and cleaned in a way that suits the finish, with an acid wash used only where the type and condition of the finish call for it.

  • Fine glass beads on durable ceramic or porcelain tiles, and softer soluble mineral or organic media on delicate glass mosaic and stone
  • Inspection for hollow, cracked or loose tiles and worn grout joints first, draining for repair if damage is widespread below the waterline
  • Shutting off circulation, blocking skimmers and vacuuming loosened scale and spent media through our independent mobile filtration cart so debris stays out of your salt cell and filter

Ongoing water care and salt-system setup

Ongoing care includes on-site water testing and balancing, equipment checks and periodic waterline cleaning. Source water, equipment, use and the finish all matter, so there is no universal dosing schedule. Before recommending a salt chlorinator or smart controller, we inspect the pump room and assess the existing setup.

Any electrical work is agreed with the owner's electrician or engineer. Where a sand filter is sound, we can keep it and refill it with PebblePure glass filter media.

  • On-site water testing and balancing during scheduled care visits, with written test logs and photo reports in your messaging app
  • Checking salt chlorinators, including scale on the cell plates, pumps, filters, incoming water filtration vessels and automatic top-up valves, plus periodic waterline cleaning
  • Optional app-controlled smart systems with live water sensors, automatic dosing and remote monitoring of sanitiser and acid balance

Where we have done this

  • Five-Villa Lagoon Pool — Pebble Pools rebuilt the flooded pump room with new pumps, valves, salt chlorinators and sand filters filled with PebblePure glass filter media, moved the control panels into weatherproof outdoor boxes and refinished the pool in PebbleCrete Classic Cool Blue.
  • Private Villa, Chalong — Pebble Pools refinished the pool shell in PebbleCrete Classic Ocean Blue with PebbleCrete Glass Indigo Pearl on the coping, and reworked the pool system with a new salt chlorinator.
  • Private Villa, Rawai — Pearl White — Pebble Pools cleaned and kept the white sandwash walls, laid PebbleCrete Classic Pearl White on the floor, steps and coping, stopped an overflow leak, and fitted a salt chlorinator and a new filter filled with PebblePure glass filter media.

Questions we are asked

Why does white scale form on a salt-water pool in Thailand, and what can be done?

Warm water, evaporation and a pH that drifts upwards — which salt chlorination encourages — leave calcium carbonate on the finish, at the waterline and in the salt cell; at the waterline it bakes together with body oils, suncream and dust into a hard crust. What can be done: test and balance the water on site, keep the cell and the pump room checked, and clean existing deposits in a way that suits the surface after a small test patch, with the water lowered where the tiles and grout are sound.

Can you clean the waterline with an acid wash?

Chemical cleaning is possible alongside degreasers and non-acid scale removers, but it must be used with care. Some crusts do not dissolve in acid, and acid can damage glaze, stone or grout, so we test a small patch first.

Does the pool need draining to remove waterline scale?

Not if the tile band and grout are sound; lowering the water level is enough. If inspection shows widespread loose tiles or missing grout below the waterline, draining for repair comes first.

Is there a standard dosing schedule for salt pools?

No. Source water, equipment, pool use and the finish all matter, so water testing and balancing are always carried out on site.

Monsoon rain and salt-water pools in Thailand: what heavy rain changes and how to manage it

Heavy rain dilutes a salt-water pool: the salt level, the sanitiser and the water balance all drop as rain and runoff come in and water leaves through the overflow, so the chlorinator makes less sanitiser. Rain also brings leaves and soil, fills balance tanks, floods low pump rooms and raises the groundwater around the shell. Managing it means testing the water on site after rain, checking the pump room and its drainage pumps, and fixing tank openings and drains that let rain and garden runoff in.

A pool pump room in a tropical climate: humidity, flooding, corrosion and space

Damp underground pits, monsoon flooding, failing valves and cramped pipework are common problems in pool pump rooms in Phuket and across Thailand. We protect them with waterproofing, raised pump plinths, outdoor weatherproof switchboards, drainage pumps and ventilation or air conditioning, simplify crowded pipework and, where space allows, move the plant above ground — for villas, hotels and resorts.

When to renovate a hotel or resort pool in Thailand: seasons, rain and keeping the hotel open

In Thailand, hotels and resorts keep busy periods clear by doing pump room, surround and waterline work with the pool open, and save drained shell renovations for quieter booking windows — timed around the rains and the site's groundwater, because an open shell needs dry conditions. Starting with an on-site inspection lets you separate urgent repairs from planned shutdowns.

Flooded pool pump rooms in Phuket: causes, damage and protection options

An underground pump room keeps equipment out of sight and out of earshot, but in the monsoon it can leave pumps, filters and switchboards standing in water. If yours has flooded: stay out of the water, keep the power off and have a licensed electrician check the electrics before anything is restarted. To stop it happening again, the pump room is either moved above flood level or protected where it is with raised pumps, relocated switchboards, back-up drainage and level switches.
