Waterline scale and stain removal

The waterline band forms not just from hard water evaporation, but from body oils and sunscreen, dust, calcium and iron baking together in the tropical sun into a very hard crust. We identify the deposit, test a small area first and, where the tile and grout are sound, clean the waterline with the water lowered rather than draining the pool.

What forms the waterline band and how we choose the method

Floating body oils, suncream and lotions trap airborne dust along the water's edge, while evaporating water leaves calcium and iron inside that greasy layer. In warm water and strong sun, these layers bond into a dense, stubborn crust across ceramic tile, glass mosaic, natural stone and PebbleCrete surfaces.

No single method suits every pool. Chemical cleaning is possible, along with enzyme degreasers that break down oils, non-acid scale removers and targeted treatments for iron or metal stains, but chemicals must be used with care. We never promise that an acid wash simply removes the band, because some mineral crusts do not dissolve in acid and acid can take tile glaze, natural stone or grout with it.

Where mechanical cleaning is needed, we use controlled media blasting with fine glass beads on durable ceramic or porcelain tiles, or softer soluble mineral and organic media on delicate glass mosaic and stone. We choose the method after identifying the deposit on site and testing a small inconspicuous area with you first, checking the dried patch together before full work begins.

  • Inspection of ceramic tiles, glass mosaic, natural stone or exposed-aggregate edges, and identification of the deposit
  • Selection between degreasing, targeted stain or chemical treatment, and wet or dry media blasting suited to the surface
  • Check for hollow, cracked or loose tiles and worn grout joints so weak grout is not disturbed
  • Confirmation of access for our mobile equipment and independent collection filter

Keeping the pool open and protecting your filtration

Cleaning sound waterline surfaces can be possible with lowered water rather than a fully drained pool. Inspection confirms suitability and access arrangements.

We assess dust control, debris collection and protection of the existing pool equipment as part of the cleaning scope.

  • Protection of skimmers, balance tanks and overflow channels
  • Pool equipment protection assessed at inspection
  • Independent debris collection equipment
  • Spent media and loosened scale are kept out of your pool pump, multiport valve, salt cell and sand filter

When lowered water is enough and when to drain

If the tile band and grout are sound, lowering the water level is all that is needed. If our inspection shows widespread loose tiles, missing grout below the waterline or a failing substrate, we will advise you honestly if the pool needs to be drained for tile repair or regrouting first.

For hotels and villas, we schedule noisy equipment around guest use and agree the programme for the individual project.

What to send for a first discussion

To plan waterline cleaning for your villa or hotel pool and prepare a quotation, send us a few details so we can arrange an inspection.

  • Close-up photos of the scale line and wider photos of the pool
  • Your property location in Phuket or elsewhere in Thailand
  • The approximate pool perimeter or size and the type of waterline tile or stone
  • Any other changes you want discussed, such as coping or grout repairs

Questions we are asked

Will media blasting damage glass mosaic or stone tiles?

Fine glass beads suit hard ceramic and porcelain tile, whereas softer mineral or organic media and non-abrasive treatments suit delicate glass mosaic and natural stone. We inspect the tile and grout beforehand and dry and check a small test area with you before proceeding.

Can you clean the waterline with acid or chemical cleaners?

Chemical cleaning is possible, alongside degreasers, non-acid scale removers and metal-stain treatments, but it must be used with care. An acid wash will not simply remove every hard crust, and it can take tile glaze, stone or grout with it. We choose the method after identifying the deposit and testing a small area.

Does the cleaning media get into the pool filter?

We keep it out of your system: we shut off your circulation and block the skimmers before work starts, and settled media is vacuumed from the pool floor using our own mobile filtration cart.

Can guests still use the pool around the work?

Cleaning may be possible with the pool filled and the water level lowered. Inspection confirms guest access restrictions and pool use arrangements.
