Salt-water conversion and smart pool systems

Converting to salt water and linking your pump room to a phone app makes a pool simpler to manage. Most of the work happens in the pump room.

Converting your pool to salt water

A salt chlorinator generates sanitiser from salted pool water. We assess whether salt conversion suits your pool and explain its ongoing water care requirements.

Before we recommend a unit, we inspect your pump room pipework, filter condition, electrical supply and water volume so the chlorinator is sized properly for your pool.

  • Salt chlorinator matched to the pool and existing equipment
  • Control equipment suited to the plant room conditions
  • Initial salt addition, water balancing and system commissioning included

App-controlled smart pool equipment

For owners living abroad, villa managers looking after several properties, and resort engineers, we also offer integrated smart pool automation that we plan and configure for your setup. Instead of separate switch boxes, one central controller links your equipment to an app on your phone.

  • A variable-speed pump that runs quietly at lower flow for normal filtration and higher flow for backwashing
  • Built-in salt chlorination and automatic dosing equipment governed by live water sensors
  • Remote monitoring of water temperature, sanitiser levels and acid balance from your phone
  • Single-app control over the circulation pump, underwater lights, water features and heaters

How the work is organised in the pump room

Whether the pool can stay full during a salt-water conversion or smart-controller installation depends on the plant room layout and shut-off valves, and in some cases draining is necessary. Where the pool can stay full, we close the isolation valves in the plant room, modify the pipework, install the controller and commission the equipment. Electrical work — including isolation, earthing and earth-leakage protection checks — is carried out by a licensed electrician agreed with you, and no one should ever enter a flooded plant room while the power is on.

If our inspection finds worn valves or leaking filters, we can replace them at the same time; because hidden issues in existing pipework or plant may only appear once work starts, work can also proceed in stages. When we upgrade a pump room, we can keep a sound sand filter and refill it with PebblePure glass filter media matched by grade, quantity and layering to the filter. Filtration removes suspended debris, while the pool still needs disinfection and water balancing, and results depend on the filter, flow rate, installation and maintenance. The programme is agreed for the individual project.

  • Inspection of existing pipe layout, shut-off valves, filter media and power supply
  • Option to move vulnerable control boxes out of damp underground chambers into weatherproof outdoor enclosures — and, where pumps or filters are relocated above water level, to design the hydraulics for the lift — with electrical work carried out by a licensed electrician agreed with you
  • Handover walkthrough for your villa manager or house staff on the app and filter routines

Monsoon rain and salt-water pools in Thailand: what heavy rain changes and how to manage it

Heavy rain dilutes a salt-water pool: the salt level, the sanitiser and the water balance all drop as rain and runoff come in and water leaves through the overflow, so the chlorinator makes less sanitiser. Rain also brings leaves and soil, fills balance tanks, floods low pump rooms and raises the groundwater around the shell. Managing it means testing the water on site after rain, checking the pump room and its drainage pumps, and fixing tank openings and drains that let rain and garden runoff in.

A pool pump room in a tropical climate: humidity, flooding, corrosion and space

Damp underground pits, monsoon flooding, failing valves and cramped pipework are common problems in pool pump rooms in Phuket and across Thailand. We protect them with waterproofing, raised pump plinths, outdoor weatherproof switchboards, drainage pumps and ventilation or air conditioning, simplify crowded pipework and, where space allows, move the plant above ground — for villas, hotels and resorts.

Why does white scale form on a salt-water pool in Thailand, and what can be done?

White scale on a salt-water pool in Thailand is calcium coming out of the water: warm water, evaporation and a pH that drifts upwards — which salt chlorination encourages — leave calcium carbonate on the finish, at the waterline and on the plates of the salt cell. At the waterline it bakes together with body oils, suncream and dust into a hard crust. It is dealt with by on-site water testing and balancing, and by cleaning the deposits in a way that suits the surface after a small test patch.

Questions we are asked

Do you need to drain the pool to convert it to salt water?

Not always. Inspection confirms whether the existing pipework and shut-off valves allow us to isolate the pump room and work with the pool filled; if the pool does need draining, we plan it carefully around wet-season and high-groundwater conditions.

Why is a smart pool controller useful for owners living abroad?

You and your villa manager can check water quality, temperature and pump status on a phone app from anywhere. You can also adjust pump speeds and lighting remotely.

Can we keep our existing sand filter when upgrading?

Yes, if our inspection shows the filter tank and multiport valve are in sound condition, we keep them in place and replace the components that are worn or undersized. We can also refill the filter with glass filter media for swimming-pool sand filters, used in place of sand when the grade, quantity and layers are matched to the filter.
