Pool regrouting and tile repair

Missing grout and loose mosaic tiles trap dirt, leave sharp edges and let water reach the render beneath. We drain the pool to regrout tilework, replace broken tiles and re-line or tile worn fibreglass pools.

Two levels of tile work

Tile work on a pool comes in two levels. The inspection shows which one your pool needs, and we explain why.

  • Regrouting and tile repair: the tiles are sound, but grout is missing or some tiles are loose or broken. We regrout and repair the existing tilework, as described on this page.
  • Deep renovation: the tiles or the render beneath them are failing over large areas. We strip the pool back to the shell, removing the old tiles, render and every added layer, then renew it in PebbleCrete or with new tiles. See our Pool resurfacing page.

Standard and epoxy pool regrouting

We carry out repairs to submerged tilework and grout in a drained, dry pool. Draining in the wet season or where groundwater is high needs assessment. Because small mosaic tiles have a small bonding area and tend to come off when laid on ordinary adhesive, we can discuss regrouting combined with a sealing coat over the whole mosaic surface to bind it into one layer, provided the underlying bed is sound and the surface can be thoroughly dried.

We offer both standard pool grout and epoxy grout. We inspect the tile type and explain how each grout performs in tropical water, and you decide which suits your property.

  • Standard pool grout for ceramic tiles and mosaics that need a tidy, practical refresh
  • Epoxy grout for glass mosaic, busy hotel pools, waterlines and steps where resistance to staining and wash-out matters most
  • Draining, cleaning, refilling and start-up water balancing organised as part of the job

Spot repairs or deep renovation

Localised ceramic or mosaic damage may suit spot repairs. We check how far the loose areas extend and whether replacement tiles can blend with the existing finish.

Widespread delamination usually points to a problem in the render or waterproofing behind the tiles. Patching it tends to move the problem around the pool. If we find this, we tell you plainly and recommend deep renovation instead. Not every hidden problem can be found at once, especially when a pool's history is unknown, so repairs and restarts can go in stages.

  • Tap-testing across the drained floor, walls, steps and waterline
  • Honest advice on whether spot repair is sensible or the pool should go back to the shell

Retiling old fibreglass pools

You do not have to throw an old fibreglass pool away when its surface wears out. We re-line the pool shell and can tile old fibreglass pools. We assess the shell with you and your engineer — or, if you don't have one, with our partner engineer — and agree the scope and groundwater precautions before draining the pool.

Because the pool must be empty for any tile or grout work, we plan the shutdown around your bookings and agree the programme for the individual project.

What to send for a first discussion

Send us the details below so we can assess your tilework, arrange an inspection and prepare a quotation.

  • Photos of the pool and close-ups of the missing grout or loose tiles
  • Your villa, hotel or resort location in Phuket or elsewhere in Thailand
  • The approximate pool dimensions and whether the shell is concrete or fibreglass
  • Whether you have in mind regrouting, tile repairs or a deep renovation

The Polar White shallow entrance in the main pool

Because mosaic has a small bonding area and on ordinary adhesive tends to come off, relaying all the mosaic was proposed, but the owners chose regrouting and a sealing coat (lamination) over the whole mosaic surface to bind it into one layer after the old deck and wall tiling came out; the main challenge was drying the surface.

Questions we are asked

Can you regrout or fix loose tiles underwater without draining?

No. Adhesives and grouts do not bond reliably to wet, algae-coated surfaces, so the pool has to be drained and dried for the repair to hold. Because draining in the wet season or with high groundwater needs care, we check site conditions before emptying the pool.

Should we choose standard grout or epoxy grout?

Standard pool grout suits straightforward maintenance on ceramic tiles. Epoxy grout stands up much better to pool treatment and staining, so it suits glass mosaic and busy hotel pools.

Why are tiles falling off in large patches?

It usually means water has got behind the tile bed or the waterproofing has failed. In that case we recommend deep renovation, as described on our Pool resurfacing page.

Can you tile an old fibreglass pool?

Yes. You do not have to throw an old fibreglass pool away. We re-line the pool shell and can tile old fibreglass pools in a drained pool after inspection.
