Reshaping the shell, ledges and entries

Older pools often have deep, boxy layouts or unused spa corners with broken blowers. We assess structural alterations and a continuous PebbleCrete finish as part of a drained pool remodel. Engineering decisions are made with you and your engineer — or, if you don't have one, with our partner engineer — and a new finish never fixes a substrate, bonding or leak problem by itself.

Where a builder or contractor is handling the main villa renovation, we can also coordinate our shell, pipework and PebbleCrete finish stages directly with them.

  • Extending the length or width of the pool or changing its footprint
  • Adding a Baja shelf (shallow sun ledge), sunken seating or a gently sloped lagoon beach entry
  • Converting a disused jacuzzi into a shallow lounge ledge or wide entry steps
  • Adding a new heated jacuzzi, air-massage zone or insulated cold plunge pool with a chiller, with the electrical work agreed with your electrician or engineer
  • Re-lining the shell of an old fibreglass pool, or tiling it, so you do not have to throw the pool away

Flood protection and circulation changes

Some Phuket pools suffer from poor original hydraulics or seasonal surface flooding during heavy monsoon rains. When remodelling a pool, we inspect the levels, drains, overflow channels, balance tank and plant room so we can solve recurring water and drainage problems at the same time. We also fit automatic emergency drainage in overflow tanks that tend to flood during storms, agreed with your electrician or engineer; battery pumps are a last line of defence rather than main drainage. Never enter a flooded plant room while the power is on — isolation, earthing and earth-leakage checks are carried out by a licensed electrician. Where plant is moved above water level, the hydraulics need to be designed for the height.

  • Raising the pool perimeter wall and coping above garden flood levels
  • Drainage channels around the pool perimeter to take garden water away
  • Lifting underground pumps and electrical boards to higher ground or upper floors, agreed with your electrician or engineer
  • Rebuilding asymmetric or leaking overflow channels, gratings and balance tanks
  • Tank-in-tank lining for leaking balance tanks and, in difficult cases, for the pool itself
  • Simplifying over-complicated pipework and resetting floor drains, skimmers and return inlets

Completing a pool left unfinished by another contractor

We complete pools left unfinished by another contractor, starting with an inspection of what is already on site. Depending on the condition and stage reached, the work can include render, embedded fittings and a PebbleCrete finish from a bare shell, or cleaning and keeping existing wall finishes while renewing the floor, steps and coping.

A new finish never fixes a substrate, bonding or leak problem by itself. Leak finding includes pipework pressure tests and pump on/off level checks, and we cannot promise to find every leak. We replace leaking pool lights with ultra-slim resin-filled surface lights.

Completion work can also include raising low balance tank and water tank openings, casting new concrete lids and putting the pump room in order with a new filter and salt chlorinator. We can fill sand filters with PebblePure glass filter media. Electrical work, including isolation, earthing and earth-leakage checks, is carried out by a licensed electrician and agreed with your electrician or engineer.

  • Render, embedded fittings and PebbleCrete finish from a bare concrete shell cast by others
  • Cleaning and keeping existing wall finishes where their condition allows
  • Renewing floors, steps, coping, surrounds and outer walls
  • Investigating overflow channel leaks and replacing leaking pool lights
  • Raising low tank openings and casting new concrete lids
  • Putting pump rooms in order, fitting filters and salt chlorinators, and restarting pools

How we inspect and organise a remodel

Deep remodelling requires the pool to be drained and stripped around the areas being altered, and draining in the wet season or with high groundwater needs care. We start with an on-site inspection of the concrete shell, terrace levels and pump room access, then agree the scope, finishes and equipment with you.

Not every hidden problem can be found at the start. Once the pool is drained and opened up, other defects can appear, especially when the pool's history is unknown. We show you what we find and agree any change to the scope with you.

For hotels and rental villas, we plan the work for a single shutdown window and coordinate site access with your manager or engineer. The programme is agreed for the individual project.

Where we have done this

Villa Colina, Khao Lak — the renewed pool and its curved shallow ledge, with the guesthouse beyondCompleted

Villa Colina, Khao Lak

Leak repair and renovation: waterproofing and foam injection, fillets at the floor joint, jacuzzi rebuilt as a shallow ledge, new steps, render and finish

The renewed pool and its curved shallow ledge, with the guesthouse beyond

The pool leaked badly through a poor original casting. We waterproofed it, rebuilt the round jacuzzi as a shallow ledge with seating, added new steps and refinished the pool.

Plunge pool raised out of the flood zone: edge lifted, drains and system rebuilt with the pumps moved up, new steps, seats and jacuzzi, new finish

The plunge pool under its waterfall wall

The plunge pool sat in a flood zone. We raised its edge, rebuilt all the drains and the system with the pumps moved to a higher level, and built new steps, seats and a jacuzzi.

The Estate, Ao Po — the overflow edge and the bay beyondCompleted

The Estate, Ao Po

Strip-out, the jacuzzi replaced with steps, a simpler system with a new filter, salt chlorinator and lighting, render, coping and the new finish

The overflow edge and the bay beyond

We cut out the unused blower and jacuzzi, built steps in the jacuzzi's place, removed the old pipework and extra inlets, and fitted a new filter, salt chlorinator and lighting.

Private Villa, Rawai — Polar White

Leak found and fixed at the overflow; tile and render stripped, new steps, drain channel, top-up, salt chlorinator and pump, new finish

The renewed pool and the villa

Water was escaping under the terrace and the house. The overflow had been rendered so high that the water stood level with the terrace; we rebuilt it slightly lower and the leak stopped. We also waterproofed the tanks and rebuilt the steps and the drain channel.

Pool completion: cleaning and restarting the pool, the pool surround and the outer wall

Cleaning freshly fixed pool

We cleaned the pool down, relaid the surround, refinished the curved outer wall and restarted the pool. The failed strip of surround was cut off and relaid in PebbleCrete Classic French Grey; the outer wall is PebbleCrete Glass Teal Pearl.

Pool completion: overflow leak fixed; new floor, steps and coping; new pool lights; tank openings raised with new concrete lids; the pump room put in order with a new filter, PebblePure and a salt chlorinator

The renewed pool along the garden

We completed this villa pool: we cleaned the sandwash on the walls and kept it, found the overflow channel leak and stopped it, and fitted new pool lights; the floor, steps and coping are new in PebbleCrete Classic Pearl White. We raised the openings of both tanks, cast new concrete lids, put the pump room in order, fitted a new filter filled with PebblePure glass filter media and added a salt chlorinator.

The Talay

New pool finish from the bare shell, with the embedded fittings set by us

The curved pool and its shallow entrance from above

We installed the finish starting from the bare concrete shell the client had cast: the render, embedded fittings and PebbleCrete Classic Pearl White finish are ours. We advised the client on how to build the shallow entrance and bring it out to zero depth without a visible step line.

Questions we are asked

Will the joint between old and new concrete leak?

Joining new concrete to an old shell is technically demanding. Not every solution is possible, and each site has its limitations. We assess this for each project before agreeing the structural and waterproofing scope, and we do not make promises we cannot keep.

What can we do with an old jacuzzi that nobody uses?

We can convert it into a shallow lounge ledge or wide entry steps. We also remove redundant blower lines to simplify the pump room.

Can you stop garden runoff from flooding our pool?

We can raise the pool edge and coping above the surrounding flood level, and install drainage channels around the pool to take garden water away. We can also adjust the drains and overflow, and move vulnerable pumps and electrical panels to higher ground — with the hydraulics designed for the height and the electrical work carried out by a licensed electrician and agreed with your electrician or engineer.

Can an old fibreglass pool be kept?

Yes. We re-line the pool shell, and we can tile old fibreglass pools. You do not have to throw an old pool away.
