What drives the scope and budget of a villa pool in Phuket
Two villa pools of a similar size in Phuket can end up with very different scopes. This guide explains what drives the work and the budget, without quoting prices, so you can plan ahead and compare quotations on the same basis.
Site and access
The site often shapes the budget before anyone talks about the pool itself.
- Access for machinery and materials: narrow lanes, steep driveways and finished gardens can mean more work by hand and careful protection.
- Where the excavated soil and rock go, and how far they have to travel
- Space to store materials and to work around a villa that is lived in or a hotel that is open
- The distance from the pool to the pump room and to the water and power supply
Soil, slope and groundwater
Phuket's hillsides and coastal flats bring different challenges. Rock sometimes has to be broken out. Soft or filled ground can need more engineering beneath the shell. On a slope, one side of the pool can stand above ground and need retaining walls. Near the coast or on low ground, groundwater, garden runoff and monsoon flooding affect both the shell and where the pump room can go. Where garden water floods into a pool, besides raising the pool edge we can install perimeter drainage channels around the pool to take runoff away.
These factors are not always visible at the start. That is why a site visit, and an engineer's investigation where needed, comes before a firm quotation.
Size, depth zones and the edge
Volume matters, but layout matters just as much. Shallow beach entries, Baja shelves (standing or tanning ledges), steps, sunken seating and a deeper swimming zone each add formwork, detailing and finish area. Such shallow zones were rarely built before because people walked on smooth ceramic tile; a textured exposed-aggregate finish feels different underfoot from smooth glazed tile and makes them practical and attractive, so the surface on these zones should be chosen with this in mind.
The edge is one of the biggest decisions. A skimmer pool is simpler. An overflow edge gives a brimming water look, and for a lagoon pool an overflow looks most natural and leaves no dirty waterline, whereas a skimmer does not give the full lagoon effect. An overflow needs a precisely levelled weir, a collection channel, and a balance tank with its own pipework, waterproofing and controls. An overflow set too high can push water into the joint under the terrace and cause leaks.
Structure, engineering and waterproofing
The shell holds back water and soil, and in some cases carries the weight of a terrace or building. Structural design of the shell, including reinforcement and calculations, and drawings for permits are prepared and signed by a licensed engineer who is our partner.
Waterproofing is a separate item from the finish. The shell, the balance tank and any underground pump room each need waterproofing of their own, which sits beneath the render and finish. A quotation that does not say what is waterproofed is hard to compare with others.
Much of the pipework ends up cast into concrete, where it is hard to reach later. Ask how the pipes are tested during construction, so that damage is caught while it can still be repaired.
Equipment, finish and water features
Features are often where the scope grows quietly. It is worth deciding early which ones matter to you, so they are designed in rather than added later.
- Equipment: pumps, filtration, water treatment, app-controlled lighting and controls, and how simple they are for your staff or manager to run
- The pump room: its position above or below ground, ventilation, water removal, noise near bedrooms and protection against flooding
- Incoming water: whether the pool will be filled from a borehole or another raw source and needs filtration
- The finish: we build pools ourselves with any finish — tile, mosaic, stone or a continuous PebbleCrete finish — along with the coping and steps that go with it
- Features: jacuzzis, air massage across a shallow ledge, waterfalls of any kind (natural stone, lit waterfalls, water curtains or cascades, plus realistic artificial rocks and boulders), fibre-optic lighting and overhead projections, each with its own pipework and equipment
Timing around the season and the monsoon
For rental villas and hotels, the shutdown window matters as much as the work itself. If you plan the shutdown for the low season, bear in mind that in Phuket it overlaps with the monsoon.
Rain affects excavation, concrete work and finishing, so the programme needs room for the weather. A new cement-based finish is filled straight after its final wash. The pool, the plant and the water supply therefore need to be ready for filling before that stage begins. Planning these dependencies early helps avoid delays and rework. The programme is agreed for each project.
Renovate or rebuild
An older pool in Phuket does not always need demolishing. If the concrete shell is sound, it can often be remodelled. A shallow beach entry, a Baja shelf (tanning ledge) or new steps can usually be added depending on the shell, levels and circulation, assessed at inspection. Extending a pool and joining old and new concrete is technically demanding and has limitations, so what is possible is assessed per project without blanket promises.
Rebuilding makes more sense where the shell is badly cracked or poorly built, or where the layout cannot be adapted. Repeated leaks that point to deeper structural problems are another reason. An inspection, with a written report and photos, gives you the facts you need to decide.
How to get comparable quotations
Quotations are easier to compare when they describe the same pool. Ask each contractor to list the following.
If a quotation is vague on any of these points, ask about it. When prices differ, check first whether the scope differs.
- Dimensions, depth zones, steps, Baja shelves or ledges and the edge type, with drawings or sketches
- Who prepares the structural design, and what the shell construction includes
- Which parts are waterproofed: the shell, the balance tank, the pump room
- Pipework, inlets, drains and how the pipes are tested
- The equipment list, with sizes, and where the pump room goes
- The finish type and colour, the coping, the steps and any features
- Draining, cleaning, filling, start-up, and care instructions at handover
- The fill water source and any incoming filtration
- What is excluded, such as electrical work agreed with your electrician or engineer, landscaping or terrace work
What to send us for a first discussion
Send us what you have, even at an early stage.
- A site plan, drawings, or photos of the site or the existing pool
- The location, and the approximate size and use of the pool
- Whether you want a new pool, a remodel, a design review or an inspection
- For an existing pool, what you see now: leaks, loose tiles, flooding or equipment problems
- Any references for the shape, edge and colour you have in mind

How we can help
Pool design
Pebble Pools designs and builds pools for owners, architects and developers of villas and hotels in Phuket and across Thailand. We plan the shape, the depth zones and the systems, then build the pool ourselves or support your builder.Pool remodelling
If an older pool no longer suits your villa or resort, we can remodel the existing concrete shell, layout and circulation without demolishing everything.Pool inspection and report
We visit your pool, inspect it closely and send you a written report with photos and our recommendations in order of priority. The report is yours to use with any contractor.Where we have done this
- Private Villa, Thepkrassatri — White Halo — A pool extension with a shallow ledge and air massage, new steps, a rebuilt overflow and balance tank, a waterfall, roof projection and fibre optics in the pool and along the garden paths and steps, refinished throughout.
- Private Villa, Nai Yang — Royal Blue — A new pool built by us from scratch, with a jacuzzi, fibre-optic lighting and an underground pump room with ventilation and water removal because there was no space above ground.
- Private Villa, Nai Yang — Atoll Pearl — A new pool built by us, with a shallow ledge, a two-zone jacuzzi, air massage, a waterfall, fibre optics and projection onto the water.
Questions we are asked
Can you give a quotation without visiting the site?
We can discuss the scope from drawings and photos. A quotation depends on the site, the ground and any existing structure, so we visit before quoting.
Can you review a pool design we already have?
Yes. Before work starts, we check the depths, levels, edge, hydraulics and pump room, and explain what we would change and why.
Is renovating always the smaller job?
Not always. A sound shell can usually be remodelled with less disruption. A shell with structural problems or repeated leaks can justify rebuilding, and an inspection shows which applies.
