Upper-floor, rooftop and precast pools

A pool on a roof, a terrace or an upper floor, or one that reaches out beyond its support, starts with structure and weight. Pebble Pools designs and builds these pools in Phuket and across Thailand, and makes lightweight and precast elements for them.

Pools above the ground

On an upper floor or a rooftop, the pool, its water and its finishes all sit on the building. We plan the pool around what the structure can carry. Early on, we also plan the waterproofing, space for the overflow and balance tank, drainage and access for equipment. On an existing building, we start by reviewing the drawings and the structure with the engineer.

  • Rooftop and terrace pools on new and existing buildings
  • Pools on the upper floors of villas, condominiums and hotels
  • Cantilevered pools that project beyond the supporting structure
  • Pump rooms on upper floors, close to the pool they serve

Lightweight and precast structures and elements

Where weight or site access matters, lighter structures and precast elements help. Precast parts are made to shape in advance and set in place on site, so there is less wet work at height and in tight spaces.

  • Precast coping, including slabs that sit over an overflow channel
  • Precast steps and benches
  • Precast wall and edge panels
  • Lightweight shell options, agreed with the engineer for the individual project

Design and engineering

We design the pool itself: the concept, sketches, 3D views and renders, the hydraulics and the equipment sizing, as described on our Pool design page. Structural design of the shell, including reinforcement and calculations, and drawings for permits are prepared and signed by a licensed engineer who is our partner. On existing buildings we also work with the building's own engineer and architect.

Waterproofing and services

A leak from a raised pool shows in the rooms below, so we plan the waterproofing with the structure rather than add it at the end. Waterproofing is one of our main areas of work, and we cover the roofs and terraces around the pool too (roof-terrace-waterproofing). Electrical work for pumps and lights is agreed with your electrician or engineer.

What to send for a first discussion

For a first discussion, send us:

  • Drawings or photos of the building and the place where the pool will sit
  • The property location in Phuket or elsewhere in Thailand
  • The pool size and shape you have in mind, and whether it is a new pool or an existing one to renovate
  • Any structural drawings or reports you already have

Questions we are asked

Can a pool be added to an existing roof?

Sometimes. It depends on what the structure can carry. Our partner engineer assesses the building, and we design the pool around the result.

Who prepares the structural drawings?

Structural design of the shell, including reinforcement and calculations, and drawings for permits are prepared and signed by a licensed engineer who is our partner.

Which parts can be precast?

Coping, steps, benches and wall or edge panels are common. Precast parts reduce wet work on site and suit places with limited access.
