Replacing and simplifying pool equipment

Many villa and hotel pools suffer from ageing pumps, leaking filters or tangled pipework added over time. When equipment fails or confuses staff, we remove redundant lines and rebuild the circulation into a clear, workable layout.

When we upgrade a pump room, we can keep your sand filter and refill it with PebblePure glass filter media. It is used in place of sand when the grade, quantity and layers are matched to the filter. Filtration removes suspended debris. The pool still needs disinfection and water balancing. Results depend on the filter, flow rate, installation and maintenance.

  • Replacing worn filters and converting old media systems to sand filters
  • Installing quiet variable-speed pumps, salt chlorinators and UV sterilisers
  • Stripping out broken air blowers, disused spa loops and redundant valves or inlets
  • Rebuilding automatic water top-up lines and replacing seized shut-off valves
  • Fitting acoustic panels, anti-vibration mats and variable-speed pumps to cut noise near bedrooms and terraces

Flood protection and underground pump rooms

Underground pump pits in Phuket often flood during monsoon rain, ruining motors and electrical boards. We rebuild flooded pump rooms and protect vulnerable underground plant before water rises.

Never enter a flooded pump room while the power is on. We decide which measures suit each site after an inspection, and all electrical work — including isolation, earthing, earth-leakage protection, switchboards, level switches and pump supplies — is carried out by a licensed electrician and agreed with the owner. Where moving or rebuilding a plant room involves structural work, we plan it with you and your engineer — or, if you don't have one, with our partner engineer.

  • Moving the entire pump room out of an underground pit to ground level or an upper floor, with the hydraulics designed for the height above water level
  • Raising pumps onto plinths above floor level inside existing plant rooms
  • Moving electrical switchboards out of damp pits into weatherproof outdoor boxes
  • Waterproofing pump room walls and floors from the inside where groundwater seeps in
  • Two or three back-up drainage pumps set at different levels and on separate power supplies, with level switches that cut power to the pool equipment if water rises
  • Low-voltage battery pumps as a last line of defence, not main drainage, if the 220 V supply fails
  • Emergency drain pumps for overflow tanks that were built without an emergency overflow
  • Air conditioning and ventilation to control humidity

Draining, pool use and site organisation

How we stage the work depends on your valve layout and where the pump room sits relative to water level. An on-site inspection decides whether the pool stays filled or must be drained; wet-season or high-groundwater conditions need assessment. Hidden problems in buried pipes or structures may only appear once work starts, so work can go in stages. The programme is agreed for the individual project.

  • Pool stays in use or water is lowered: replacing pumps, filters, chlorinators, switchboards and acoustic lining when valves isolate the lines, or building a relocated pump room before final pipe switchover
  • Pool must be drained: rebuilding main floor drains, altering buried shell pipes, waterproofing inside the pool or balance tank, or raising a flooded pool edge
  • Who decides what: we inspect the plant, explain what can stay and agree the setup with the owner, villa manager or hotel engineer

Deep renovation after a flooded pump room: new pump room and system, rebuilt jacuzzi, new lighting, the finish and the terrace

The lagoon pool and its planted island

After the underground pump room flooded, we rebuilt the system with sand filters, new pumps, air conditioning, level-activated drainage and outdoor switchboards.

The overflow tank had been built without an emergency drain and kept flooding. We added a forced emergency drain run by a low-voltage 12-volt pump, and fitted a new sand filter and salt chlorinator.

Questions we are asked

Can the pool stay open while you upgrade the pump room?

Some pump room upgrades can be carried out with the pool filled. Inspection confirms draining requirements, circulation interruptions and restrictions on pool use.

How do you protect an underground pump room that stays in place?

First, never enter a flooded pump room while the power is on. To protect an underground room that stays in place, we raise the pumps on plinths and move the switchboards into weatherproof outdoor boxes. Depending on the site, we add back-up drainage pumps at different levels on separate power, low-voltage battery pumps as a last line of defence (not main drainage) if the 220 V supply fails, waterproofing from the inside, and air conditioning or ventilation. Level switches can shut the main equipment down if water rises.

Who handles the electrical connections for the pump room?

All electrical work for the pool equipment — including isolation, earthing and earth-leakage protection checks — is carried out by a licensed electrician and agreed with the owner. Any new main supply or work on the building's electrical system is also coordinated with your building engineer.
